The photo we chose for the inaugural award was a clear and thoroughly deserved winner. We think it's an incredible snapshot of drama, energy and youth. Congratulations to John Lewis.
WINNER
Photographer: John Lewis, Glasgow (website, email)
Subject: Sam McTrusty, Twin Atlantic
Location: ABC, Glasgow; October 6, 2008
John Lewis: "The image itself was a big slice of luck and fortunate timing to be honest. I have shot Twin Atlantic a few times before so I was familiar with how they perform and move on stage. I remembered that Sam jumps at a particular point in What Is Light? Where Is Laughter? I focused on him and it was just a matter of waiting to see if he would do it. I shot one frame and was lucky enough to capture it. The lighting had been awful, but for whatever reason there was a strobe of spotlights just at that point. Without that I wouldn't have caught it."

2ND PLACEPhotographer: Andy Thorn, Aberdeenshire
Subject: Scott Weiland, Velvet Revolver
Location: Academy, Glasgow; March 20, 2008
This photo was taken on a significant night in Velvet Revolver's history. Singer Scott Weiland announced during the gig that this would be the band's final tour. The next day drummer Matt Sorum posted a message on his website, saying: "You could tell who was unhappy last night... some people in this business don't realise how great of a life they have." Weiland hit back: "The state of my family affairs is really none of his business since he is too immature to have a real relationship, let alone children. So don't attempt to stand in a man's shoes when you haven't walked his path." The band have vowed to replace Weiland and carry on.
3RD PLACEPhotographer: Sinéad Grainger, Dunfermline
Subject: Jimmy Urine, Mindless Self Indulgence
Location: ABC, Glasgow; April 26, 2008
Sinéad Grainger: "Jimmy Urine brought me up on stage and asked to take a photograph of the crowd and then of him as well as the other members, which is how this came about. It was my first photo pass and quite an incredible experience. I thought I'd choose this photograph as it holds a lot of meaning and I feel it carries the essence of the band and their crazy gig experience."
